The co-hosts of the popular Zen Parenting Radio Podcast join Chris and I for a hearty discussion on Parenting. Cathy and Todd Adams discuss their particular way of being self-aware parents and how they overcome the daily challenges of being responsible parents.

Some takeaway points from this podcast are:

-Parenting is "simple... but not easy"

-Steve provides a really bad sports analogy

-How to handle not becoming "offended" when a child yells back at you or disrespects the parent

-We spend a good bit of time talking about the partnership of parents and how important that is, and also how to manage that relationship in a healthy way

Steve's Aftershow Deep Thoughts:

Oddly (but not so oddly), I walked away from this interview noticing a parallel between 'Parenting Podcasts' and 'Business Management Podcasts' because they both share the same language and structure. Both topics are about empowering the individual who is being managed to be free and creative but yet there is always a need for safe boundaries. Both topics tackle the issue of establishing order. Both topics understand that a reward system is necessary. Both topics understand that discipline must be catered to foster learning from the example (the fear of punishment is a powerful motivator to curb behaviors but not so much a motivator to be innovative).

Management and parenting may just be one in the same. Is there a relationship between how we treat children and how we treat adults? Are there universal behaviors and treatments that can be gleaned from one topic and transferred to the other topic?

Obviously, I will concede that this may not always be the case (diaper changing for example) but in most situations you can transfer a success/failure example in the parenting realm and achieve a relative success/failure in the business realm. It certainly is worth noting and experimenting with in your personal life.

Until next time... take care.

Steve

When I travel, I want peace of mind about mkiang sure my connections to and from the airport will run smoothly and like to explore my transportation options both price and convienience wise. It is nice to have access to detailed information in English about shuttle services, trains, etc even in places all over the world.I also usually look for customer reveiws about destinations and hotels, restaraunts, shopping etc.. I am a budget traveler, so I like to try and find the most bang for my buck wherever I go and I don`t like to rely on only commercial advertisements which may not give the full story. I also like to find out which destinations are unique to the area and which places are good for families (since I am now traveling with a small child). When planning a trip to Hong Kong for instance, I found out about an amuzement park/zoo/water park/aquarium/seaworld place called Ocean Park which turned out to be much less crowded and a better value than going to Hong Kong Disneyland and had a lot more culture as well! We only read about it in a few places but the place was fantastic and makes Hong Kong a wonderful family destination! I wasn't able to breastfeed for long but I do think that if a baby is hrnugy then it's sad for people to expect the mum to take a child to a bathroom or somewhere else to feed when the people who are complaining wouldn't do that. I don't think there is a right age. I think the natural wearing age of humans is around 7, when we lose our milk teeth. I think it's sad that within our culture there are so many people who are offended at something that is so natural. Because breasts are constantly portrayed as sex objects', it's understandable. I just hope my son grows up to realise the difference and what it means to a mum to breastfeed her child. We all need to do our best to be supportive of other parent's choices. I can think of far worse things a parent could be doing to their child! Time magazine have definitely chosen photos to cause controversy!
